Healthway “Be In Sync” Week
Once again, SynchroWA is very grateful to sponsorship from Healthway. For the second year running, a Healthway grant allowed us to introduce the sport to beginners. We hosted ten ‘Come & Try’ sessions at the following pools: Fremantle, Melville, Canning, Terry Tyzak, Ballajura, Mandurah, Craigie, Belmont, Rockingham and Claremont. The 2-hour sessions took place during one week in January and more than 100 girls aged between 8-18 took part.
Eleven SynchroWA coaches, parents and swimmers ran the sessions, and as a result we have established regular swimming sessions at Claremont, Melville and Craigie on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays respectively. Congratulations to all involved in the preparation and delivery of the sessions including; Alexandra Miller, Brogan Smith, Natasha Larter, Natalia Malinowski, Dee McCann, Mary Andreotta, Aoife McCann, Skye Reynolds, Jade Haynes-Love, Aine McCann and Brian Miller.
Jade Haynes-Love and WAIS
SynchroWA is delighted to announce that Jade Haynes-Love has been awarded an individual scholarship from WAIS. After a detailed application process, Jade was notified that she had become the first ever Synchronized Swimmer to be given this honour. Jade has some of her costs reimbursed and she also has access to scientific and medical services at WAIS at the Challenge Stadium.
SynchroWA bids to host the National Titles
and Olympic Trials for 2012
We have submitted a fully costed bid to host next year’s Olympic Trials and National Titles here in Perth at Challenge Stadium. The Synchronised Swimming Australia committee will decide the outcome of the bid in May. Western Australia last hosted the Nationals in 1979, so we think it’s our turn!
WA swimmers make the National squads
Three SynchroWA swimmers have been selected for National squads. Jade Haynes-Love and Debbie Tsai have both been selected for the Australian Olympic Squad, and Aoife McCann has been selected for the Australian Talent Identification Squad. A number of squad training sessions have already been held in the Eastern States, but we will host our first national talent ID squad session in Perth in July.
SynchroWA hosts its first State Titles for nearly 40 years
March 27th saw SynchroWA host the State Titles at Claremont Pool. A total of 9 swimmers competed across a range of events, and in addition we had some 24 “beginner” swimmers undertaking elements of their Star Awards, as well as performing basic routines. Mary Andreotta was the competition manager and we were grateful for her efforts as, for most of the volunteers and parents, this was the first time they had been part of running a championships. Everyone did a fantastic job and it was a great day and the younger swimmers got a chance to watch the senior swimmers perform their routines as a prelude to next month’s nationals.
